Weekly Fishing Reports

Weekly California Delta Chambers fishing reports are generated every week, produced by anglers and others who are close to the beating heart of the California Delta angling activity. Our reporters are chosen for both their veracity and variety. The makeup of our columnists list may vary a bit over the months, and we will make some attempt to cover various geographical areas in this 1,000-mile waterway system. We also will attempt to cover a variety of fisheries and fishing methods -- from crawdads to catfish, from trolling for stripers to plugging for black bass.

We welcome feedback from our visitors with information on where the bite is hot, or on a particularly outstanding catch. Please contact the appropriate columnist via e-mail or telephone. Or contact me via e-mail. If you have good digital photos* that might fit well with these Delta fishing reports, please e-mail them to us. We try to use virtually all fishing photos received on our Fish Photos page.  *Submitted photos cannot be returned and will become the property of the California Delta Chambers.

WEEKLY DELTA FISHING REPORTS

Save Our Stripers!
www.saveourstripers.org

We need our chamber members help to defeat proposed legislation to deregulate the striped bass. A Kern County assembly woman has introduced legislation to open them to unlimited take, no size limit, commercial fishing, etc. as retaliation to our efforts to protect our delta water. If you feel this will affect your members businesses please visit the site and sign on in opposition:  www.saveourstripers.org.

If you have more questions, write or visit the California Sportfishing Protection Alliance at www.calsport.org. Note that all fishing organizations in our region and our state oppose this legislation. Our Department of Fish and Game disagrees with the premise of this legislation and is currently fighting a similar attack on our striped bass fishery in court. Your support in opposition is CRITICAL in helping to crush this legislation before it has a chance to ruin our fishery and harm your business!

Delta Bank Fishing
by Roland “Innovate” Aspiras

During a good portion of the year, the Rio Vista area is rocked by wind and waves making boating a difficult task, especially for inexperienced mariners. Fishing is even harder when it is windy. When you can get proper boat position in the current, bite detection becomes a very daunting task. However, the weather over the Halloween weekend was terrific, and many anglers took advantage to try for fall stripers and sturgeon.

The fishing was spotty, however quite a few stripers were landed by anglers fishing from Chain Island up to Decker Island. Bait fisherman were more successful than trollers, as trolling was a bit difficult with the fast full-moon tides. Shad and mudsuckers are top baits to use. My dad took a solo trip on Sunday, fishing the Sherman Island area for one very nice 10 lb striper and about a dozen sub-legals and legals from 16-18 inches. He took the big boy home for my mom, who enjoyed some striper to eat later that evening. I had no chance of going out with him that morning due to Halloween activities the night before – but man did I wish that I could have gone!

Sturgeon fishing remains a very good bet for anglers fishing from Simmons Point to Decker Island. Bank fisherman have a good chance off Sherman Island road.

Captain Kevin Yost of Lucky Strike Fishing has done well in the Pittsburg area, and noted that the outgoing tide has been better than the incoming. I happened to fish with the Captain two weeks ago on a night trip, also in the Pittsburg area. For 4 anglers including Kevin, we had 9 sturgeon to boat with one keeper at 47 inches. I lost what seemed to be 2 very nice sturgeon after the hookset and missed many others. I guess I was a bit rusty as the last time I fished for sturgeon before that night was almost a year ago. We used ghost/grass shrimp, pile worms and eel for our fish.

I saw that Mr. Dale “FishWisher” Gillespie also had some good that same week, bringing in sturgeon at 50, 66, and 49 inches over a three day period. He used his trusty eel for bait. Good work Dale!

Fishing in the Metro Sac area is still fairly quiet for both sturgeon and stripers, however both species are sporadically being caught from Courtland to Freeport. Sardines for the stripers, and ghost shrimp for the sturgeon. The fishing for sturgeon usually heats up around Thanksgiving, but if you’re wanting a quick trip locally, I’d definitely suggest fishing the above mentioned areas.

Fishing for myself has been very few and far between lately due to my hectic schedule, but what else is new? I plan on taking some vacation in and around Thanksgiving, so maybe I might be able to sneak out and try some fall fishing in the Delta.

For those seeking to get out this weekend, I highly suggest the Rio Vista area for stripers and sturgeon. There is a slight chance of rain on Saturday and Sunday, however nothing too major. Sunday would probably be the better choice, and Monday the best choice for those of you that have it off.
To all, have a fun time on the banks and as always – make sure you pick up after yourself so the next person can enjoy the spot you just fished!

Isleton Area
by Can Nguyen -- Bob's Bait Shops

The weather was really good during the week last week. The temperature was above 70 degrees during the afternoon time. It was calm and very nice. This was very good for fishing activity in the Delta area where the fall run for striped bass was hot and likely will continue through this week.

There was very good news from bank anglers and boat anglers in most parts of the Delta that striped bass were running very good. Most anglers got their limit striped bass easily on either baits or trolling with artificial lures. One sport angler who trolled along the Rio Vista Bridge got over a dozen keeper striped bass on Yoyuri and Broken Back Rebel lure. He mainly caught and released. Other anglers who trolled in Decker Island, Sandy Beach, and the Isleton Bridge reported very well too. Most striped bass caught recently were from 3 lbs to 20 lbs. Striped bass bite on sardine, anchovy, shad, grass shrimp, blood worm, pile worm, or even chicken liver. Live baits are also work best.  Live baits available this time are live minnow or live mud sucker.

Chris Weldy from Sacramento got 17 lbs striped bass on mud sucker on 10/31/09 at Liberty Island. I went out to troll from the mouth of Rio Vista Bridge to Isleton Bridge and got very good results. Most fish were released safely.

Sturgeon fishing has been slowing a bit compared to a week before. Most sturgeon reported in Cache Slough, Sherman Island, or Decker Island. Sturgeon baits available now are grass shrimp and ghost shrimp. Most sturgeon bite during the tide changes either from low to high or from high to low tide.

Black Bass and small mouth bass fishing were still very good in the Isleton area and in the San Joaquin River side. Live minnows are the good bait for black bass or small mouth bass.

Catfish fishing was good in Mokelumne Rivers, Georgiana Slough, Isleton public fishing pier or Isleton Bridge. Best luck to you and have a nice coming weekend.

Antioch-Oakley Area
by Chris Lauritzen -- Lauritzen Yacht Harbor

What a week it has been.  First there were the north winds in the West Delta, then we had fog last Saturday morning then we saw a real nice striper come into the harbor.

The north wind blew for a couple of days last week. That looked like it might be the start of an early winter. We see most of the best north winds in January and February when they come down from Canada and really cool things down. That was not the case at least for now. By last Friday, things had warmed up so that we had a pretty decent weekend, however it started with a surprise what I will call (fall fog).

As I was opening up the gates early Saturday morning I could see the fog start to move in at a pretty fast pace. By about 9:30 am the fog was gone and everything was clear for the rest of the day. I believe the fog came in because the north winds had cooled the San Joaquin River down from a constant of 63 degrees at the Antioch Marina a week ago to a new high of 58 degrees last Friday at the Antioch Marina.

Dee Thomas was pre fishing in the West Delta on Saturday and reported that the water temperature in Sherman Lake was in the 61 degree range, still very fishable.

Last weekend the fish cops were in the Antioch Bridge area.  They had enough business that I’m sure they will be back again. The violations included short stripers, sturgeon that were not tagged, the usual notes and bolts things that keep them in business.

The catch of the week goes to our very own Alex Soto of Antioch who caught a whopping 20 lb, 38 inch fresh run striper. Alex was fishing near Eddo’s with anchovies for bait on the outgoing current.  The kicker is that Alex landed the fish all by himself. Not too bad for 76 years young.

I know there were other stripers caught last week because I saw folks over at the fish cleaning station prepping their catch.

According to the fish cops, sturgeon have started moving into the area as they are seeing more sturgeon tied up to boats and they make their boats stops.

It seem like the water temperature is now holding probably in the 60 degree range or better thanks to the warmer than expected weather for this time of year. We have had good showing of fisherman all week. Our launch ramp parking area has been at least half full most of the week. I would go out on a boat just to be out becaise the weather has been that good. I’m also surprised that we have had that many fishermen out with the full moon that we had on Monday night. Nothing prettier then a harvest moon.

If you are planning to fish the West Delta this weekend make yourself an imaginary box and in that box you put in Broad Slough to the West and False River/Three Mile Slough to the East and fish both the Sacramento River and the San Joaquin River this weekend. I’m sure you would have a little luck in the striper category.

There were some striper right out in front of the harbor this morning. We had both boats anchored and bass boating plugging right on the sand bar in front of our harbor. I don’t know that I would pass that opportunity up this weekend.

Last week during the north wind cycle, a duck hunter drowned while trying to retrieve a duck he had shot. I don’t care who you are, we all need to wear a PFD if we are out on the water. They make the devices so comfortable now that it is not that big a deal.

This weekend is the start of the crab season for the north coast. Some of my buddies at Bodega Bay have been doing a little testing to see where the hot spots might be. The commercial season will begin the following Saturday November 14th. If you are planning on heading out for some crab this weekend make sure that you check the marine weather channel before you venture out be safe and good luck to you.

See you on the water.

DELTA BANK FISHING
Roland Aspiras
His fishing experience goes back to being very young. He has fished everywhere from the mountains, the beach, lakes, streams, ponds and of course the rivers, bays, and sloughs of the California Delta. The Old Sacramento River including its connecting sloughs have been places that he fishes frequently for sturgeon, stripers, bass, catfish and panfish.
